A Bit of Background

In 1991 Detroit Firefighter, Elvis Johnson began a self-supporting little league baseball team. Over the next two and a half decades- "Rookie Johnson became Lieutenant Johnson, spending much of his off duty time volunteering with multiple organizations and becoming a High School Sports Coach. Towards the end of his 27 year career, in 2017, The Coach Johnson Foundation, Ltd. was founded. This newly formed non-profit organization has raised an average of $27k per year, since its inception. Those funds have benefited multiple organizations such as Think/Detroit PAL and The Detroit Westside Cubs.

In 2020, the pandemic reached the city and Lt. Johnson was hospitalized, placed in a coma with only a 20% survival rate. Only a couple months later- The CJF was able to formulate an operational summer and fall league in the only Covid-19 compliant team sport (baseball). Near the end of the 2020 season, the organization was hit by vandalism. Local media joined crowd funding efforts and the organization was able to raise over $33k in donations.

Reinforcing our Commitment

Our Athletic program begins with the first organization “The Westwood Hoyas” (formerly the Dearborn Heights “Red Dogs”).  The baseball/softball program became a “go to” when there were no other teams available in the immediate area.  The teams currently play both locally and around the region.  Schedule runs from June through October. Bowling and Basketball are being added in 2022.  Football, Cheer, and Track by 2023 and 2024.

Helping The Community

Youth, Group/Team, & Individual Counseling (Mental Health)

The Coach Johnson Foundation will partner with qualified counselors for our Youth, Group, & Individual Counseling program.  Community based operations offer counseling to individuals, group/teams, and families.  Specialists in underrepresented groups are essential to provide a safe, relaxing, judgement-free space that encompasses both social work values as well as a therapeutic, holistic, approach.

The CJF believes in normalizing “mental fitness” in the same congruency as physical fitness (strong mind/strong body).  The organization could not begin to make a difference if we do not motivate those we serve to become part of the solution for better moral.

Communication, Media, & The Performing Arts

Reinforcing our Commitment

Our most exiting addition to our program is our “CMA” program.  Communication, Media, & the Performing Arts program allows our kids to engage in their most creative qualities in an adaptive transition to place theatre, music, and media into productive applications which is only limited by their imaginations.  Volunteers are needed in these areas.  Please contact us if you are interested.
